How I approach a logo

A logo has to do its job in a lot of places, most of them out of sight while it is being designed. So I start with where it will be used, and design for the hardest of those first.

  • Where it will live

A sign, a van, a social avatar or a letterhead. I ask where it will be seen most, and start there.

  • Small and large

It has to be clear at the size of a browser tab and still hold up on the side of a building, so I test it at both.

  • Colour and no colour

It should work in one colour, on light and on dark, and in print as well as on screen.

  • Part of something bigger

A logo is one part of a brand. When a business needs more, I build the colours, typography and guidelines around it.

Mockups are illustrative: the designs are real, the scenes around them are staged.
